2014 Estate Cabernet Sauvignon 'Block 11'
From its purple-black hue to its complex aromas of cassis, wet stone, blackberry, tar, tapenade and sweet tobacco leaf, this is an elegant and age-worthy expression of Cabernet. On the palate, flavors of blackberry, black licorice and ripe cherry, mingle with hints of vanilla, sage and olives, while firm tannins and fresh acidity carry the wine to a long, bright finish.
Our renowned vineyard features ten benchland and hillside blocks of Cabernet Sauvignon. To spotlight the rich diversity of our property, we occasionally craft small-production Cabernets from our finest blocks and barrels. These wines represent the pinnacle of our portfolio. This special limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon comes from the southern end of our Block 11. These “short rows” feature clone 337 vines grow in low-vigor gravelly loam soils, yielding small clusters of intense grapes.
After picking at a modest 23.0° Brix, fermentation techniques included indigenous yeast, extended 15-day maceration and 100% whole berries.
To accentuate their lush, rich fruit character, we gently fermented the grapes in open-top tanks, before aging this Cabernet for 18 months as 100% free-run wine in 50% new, seasoned French Sylvain barrels.
